Amnesty International UK launches community website

1 September 2008

UK branch of human rights charity Amnesty International is gaining attention for its newly-launched community website, ProtecttheHuman.com.

Set up as part of its wider Protect the Human campaign, the community website is a user-friendly source of information, which aims to cultivate a group of supporters for Amnesty International UK campaigns.

ProtecttheHuman.com's accessible layout will be familiar to users of social networking and media websites such as YouTube, Facebook and Bebo.

Visitors are encouraged, in the site's own words, to: Sign petitions, write emails and generally be a pain in the neck to the world's tyrants, traffickers, torturers and arms dealers.

By signing up to Amnesty International UK's community website, members can post their views and videos, discuss human rights issues and take a stand by signing online petitions.

The site has already made use of YouTube video embedding, by launching a campaign to grant clemency to an American death row prisoner.

Following the launch of this community website, Amnesty International UK plans to expand its new media communications further next year, by introducing blogs, galleries and events calendars amongst other online tools.

Web and new media manager, Sara Ashton said: Our digital engagement strategy is a big investment area for us.
