ACS Website to Aid Charity Retail Sector

09 February 2010

According to an article by Kaye Wiggins for Third Sector, the Association for Charity Shops (ACS) is organising a group to meet in April to discuss a new web database. It would detail grant and funding opportunities for charities that use retail outlets to further their cause.

"Many heads of retail in charities don't think about applying for government grants or contracts. But there are plenty of funds they could be eligible for. Some of the bigger government funding databases are wide-ranging. This would be targeted specifically at charities with high-street shops."

These words came from ASC’s incoming CEO Warren Alexander. The effort was inspired by a need for more support for training young people for jobs in charity shops.

Mr Alexander referred to The National Council for Voluntary Organisation’s (NCVO) government-funded site, called Funding Central, that lists over 4,000 contracting and funding opportunities. The proposed new site would specifically target charities nurtured by the ASC to further their vision of a thriving charity retail sector in the UK, one that also encourages our young people to jumpstart their careers by training to work in this sector.
