Record Number of Potholes Reported at Charity Website

27 January 2010

UK’s national cyclist organization, CTC, hosts a website called www.fillthathole.org.uk to facilitate the reporting of pothole problems. Potholes, of course, are particularly dangerous to cyclists.

In the wake of our recent severe winter weather, the highest number of monthly hits ever at the site have been recorded this January, even though seasonal rains usually result in most potholes being reported in February and March.

Pothole problems are exacerbated by snowfall and freezing temperatures, as moisture penetrates cracks and then expands as it freezes, causing ruptures in the road surface.

The not-for-profit organisation, established in 1878 and funded through memberships and donations, focuses on the social side of cycling as well as being a powerful and independent voice on behalf of all cyclists. CTC is using the latest technology at their Fill That Hole website to assist local authorities in locating dangerous potholes and road conditions and to urge them to rectify the problems before serious accidents occur.

Users need only identify the location of the pothole on the website’s map and CTC does the rest, notifying the proper authority. That authority is responsible for fixing any dangerous situation, and the site can provide evidence that authorities were made aware of the situation in the event that someone is injured.
